Market Recap

Over the last three months of 2025, global risk assets achieved solid gains, extending a historically fast rebound that began in early April, but at a slower pace. The advance was fueled by strong corporate fundamentals, a resilient global economy, corporate spending on artificial intelligence and dovish monetary policy from key central banks. Global economies remained in expansion, and corporate earnings growth across developed and emerging markets supported asset prices.

Against this dynamic backdrop, U.S. stocks advanced 2.35% in Q4, as measured by the Dow Jones U.S. Total Stock Market Index, which lost some momentum following a strong month of October (+2.20%), mostly reflecting investors' concern about a potential AI bubble. The quarter's advance was underpinned by a buoyant domestic economy and two policy interest-rate cuts by the Federal Reserve, aiming to cushion labor market weakness. By sector within the index, health care (+12%) fared best in Q4, followed by communication services (+6%). Conversely, real estate and utilities (-2% each) stocks lagged by the widest margin.

International equities rose 5.07% the past three months, based on the MSCI ACWI (All Country World Index) ex USA Index. The U.K. (+7%) and the rest of Europe (+6%) led the way, whereas Asia Pacific ex Japan (+1%) was unable to keep pace. Information technology (+11%) stood out among sectors, while materials gained about 9%. Conversely, communication services (-7%) notably trailed.

U.S. taxable investment-grade bonds were up 1.10% for the quarter, per the Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate Bond Index. Here, short-term (3 to 6 months) U.S. Treasury bonds topped long-term Treasurys (10+ years). Investment-grade corporates lagged the broader index, but commercial mortgage-backed securities and government agency bonds outperformed. Investment-grade municipal bonds, as measured by the Bloomberg Municipal Bond Index, were up 3.00%, aided by resurgent investor demand and policy interest-rate cuts. Elsewhere, emerging-markets debt (+3.04%), U.S. high-yield corporate credit (+1.35%), short-term bonds (+0.99%) and Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (+0.31%) each concluded Q4 in positive territory.
